Les
Baladins de Céret, an association under the French law of 1901,
were founded in 2002 with the aim of promoting, through regular
weekly meetings, the study and performance of songs and dances
from the period 1450 -1650 approximately. We not only take part in
local festivals, charity events and medieval banquets, but have
also sung in churches and chapels throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
Membership
has always been open to all, and members are encouraged to take part in
all aspects of our activities, including public performance in costume.
We also try to make use of members' skills in related areas, such
as drama, poetry and instrumental music whenever possible.
To
ensure the greatest possible authenticity, we work with primary sources
whenever we can, though like most groups of this nature we also use
secondary sources when the primary sources are unclear - as is so
often the case. Our dance repertoire ranges from Italian balli of the
fifteenth century to English and French country dances of about 1650,
drawing on the works of Arbeau, Playford and Feuillet, among
others. A similar diversity is evident in our songs. Depending on the
circumstances, these might be anything from drinking songs, rounds and
catches to religious anthems of the period. In addition to French, we
also sing in Latin, English and Spanish; similarly, our repertoire
includes a number of songs in Catalan which are known to most
choirs in the region, and are always popular with local audiences and
performers alike.
New
members are always made welcome. We meet every Saturday morning at
09.30 in the Gymnase Boxe Française, Avenue Michel Sageloli,
Céret (in front of the college). There is sometimes a recess in the Summer.
